Íngólfstorg Plaza

Íngólfstorg Plaza

A project I worked on with Sigfinnur Böðvarsson. Sigfinnur received a grant from the City of Reykjavík to build a few skateboarding obstacles in the city square. The plaza had long been shared between local motorcyclists and skateboarders, and this project helped solidify the skateboarders’ presence, a huge win for the local skate scene.

After a few meetings, Sigfinnur brought in CAD sketches of our finalised concept. The finish of the ledges was designed to match the existing tiles of the square, allowing the new elements to blend seamlessly into their surroundings.

The result fits this intention quite elegantly. The ledges are built from concrete reinforced with A142 steel mesh (6 mm cross bars), clad in granite tiles, with the flipped side of those same tiles used on the grind edges for a smoother and longer-lasting feel.
